Cholera:
SteriPEN will destroy cholera (a bacteria).
Cryptosporidium and Giardia:
Both Cryptosporidium and Giardia are among the easiest microbes to destroy with UV, even in the cyst form. They require far lower doses than bacteria or viruses. UV light kills Crypto and Giardia - 16 oz. in less than a minute. 32 oz. in a minute and one-half. While it takes 4 hours to kill crypto using chemicals, UV light is extremely effective in germicidally scrambling it's DNA and rendering it incapable of reproducing.
Electronics:
SteriPEN uses a fairly straight forward electronic ballast - essentially a Royer Oscillator. The input is nominally 5 Watts with an output of approximately 350VAC RMS @ 40kHz. SteriPEN's electronics are what is termed a regulated power supply. This means that the lamp always gets the same voltage and current or none at all. This means that the lamp will provide the same dose each time rather than going dimmer as a flashlight does when the batteries discharge.
Frequency of SteriPEN use:
Steri-Pen can be used as often as needed. When the button on the unit is pressed and you see a green, blinking light the unit is ready to treat it's next batch of water.
Ice:
We are unable to make any claims as to whether SteriPEN will effectively treat ice because ice can range in clarity from virtually transparent to opaque, and while SteriPEN might work to some extent on clear ice it probably would not work well at all on cloudy ice.
Lamp Output:
The SteriPEN uses a cold cathode low pressure mercury vapor lamp. The lamp is nominally 5 watts with an operating voltage of about 350VAC rms and a regulated current of 12.5mA. Primary output is at 253.7 nanometers with a standard dose of approximately 45 millijoules per sq. cm.
